THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the raw form of THC that cannabis and hemp plants actually produce. On its own, THCA won’t get you high. When you heat it, by smoking, vaping or dabbing, it turns into Delta 9 THC, which does. That one fact explains almost everything about THCA products: why they are sold, why they feel like traditional cannabis, and why they show up on drug tests.
What is THCA?
Living cannabis plants don’t make much THC directly. Instead, they produce THCA in the tiny, resin-filled glands on the flowers called trichomes. THCA is an acid, which means its molecule carries an extra group of atoms (a carboxyl group). That extra group changes its shape enough that it doesn’t fit well into the CB1 receptors in your brain responsible for THC’s effects.
In fresh or carefully dried flower, most of the THC potential is still in THCA form. That is why lab reports for flower usually show a high THCA number and a much smaller Delta 9 THC number.
Does THCA get you high?
Raw THCA doesn’t produce a high. Heated THCA does. When THCA is exposed to enough heat, it loses that carboxyl group as carbon dioxide and becomes Delta 9 THC. This process is called decarboxylation, and it happens almost instantly when you:
- Smoke THCA flower, pre-rolls or moonrocks
- Use a THCA vape, where the coil heats the concentrate
- Dab THCA wax or THCA diamonds
In the kitchen it takes longer. Cooks typically heat flower in an oven for 30 to 45 minutes before making edibles so that the THCA converts.

Is THCA the same as weed?
Chemically, heated THCA flower and marijuana deliver the same thing: Delta 9 THC. The difference has been mostly legal. Hemp has been defined by how much Delta 9 THC it contains, and THCA was counted separately, which is how THCA flower and vapes came to be sold as hemp products. Federal and state rules on THCA are changing, so check the current laws where you live. Our guide Is THCA Legal? has more detail.
THCA vs THC
THCA and THC are the same compound at two different stages. THCA is the non-intoxicating acid the plant makes, and THC is what it becomes after heat. Because the molecule loses a little weight when it converts, 1 gram of THCA can become up to about 0.877 grams of THC. How long does THCA stay in your system?
Once THCA is heated and inhaled, your body processes it the same way it processes THC. Standard drug tests look for THC-COOH, a metabolite of THC, so THCA products can cause a positive result. Detection windows vary widely with how often you use THC, your metabolism and the type of test. A few days is common for occasional users, while frequent users can test positive for several weeks. If you are drug tested, avoid THCA products.
How to start with THCA
- Vapes and smokables: take one or two puffs and wait 10 to 15 minutes before taking more. Effects usually last two to four hours.
- Edibles: start with a small amount and wait at least two hours before taking more, since edibles take longer to kick in and last longer.
- Check the lab report: every Serene Tree product has a Certificate of Analysis showing its THCA and THC content.
THCA FAQs
Does THCA get you high?
Not raw. Once it is heated by smoking, vaping or dabbing, it turns into Delta 9 THC and produces the same high.
Is THCA stronger than THC?
No. By weight, THCA converts to slightly less THC (about 87.7%), so 1,000mg of THCA can produce up to about 877mg of THC. In practice, THCA and Delta 9 products of similar strength feel very similar.
Is THCA flower the same as weed?
Once it is smoked, yes: both deliver Delta 9 THC. The difference is how the plant is classified and regulated.
Will THCA show up on a drug test?
Yes, it can. Heated THCA becomes THC, and drug tests look for a THC metabolite.
How long does a THCA high last?
When inhaled, effects usually start within minutes and last two to four hours. Edibles take longer to start and last longer.
